Mission and Vision
The Center for Discovery is a community of care that enables and encourages people with disabilities by attending to all the aspects of a productive, meaningful, and happy life, by creating a model of an inclusive and welcoming place to belong that supports the well-being of all its members, enriches the regional economy, creates valued work opportunities on Main Street and safeguards and enriches the health and well-being of individuals and the land that sustains us.
We see The Center as a landscape of possibilities, a community of care devoted not only to the health and well being of people with disabilities, but to all the people who call this home, and to the larger community of which we are a part.
At the heart of The Center is farming, nourishing the body, mind and spirit. The hard and valued work of farming fosters independence and promotes health. The organic methods and practices are thoughtfully designed to promote the long term health and sustainability of the land, water and food systems that extend well beyond our fences.
Our vision connects our farms with the rural hamlet of Hurleyville, its people and neighbors in Sullivan County. We envisage a safe and thoughtfully revitalized Main Street as a hub of activity–with a farm store, and arts center, restaurants and shops and walking trails all enriching an increasingly diverse and attractive community.
Housing for Center staff and innovative housing options for residents who will live and work and farm in and around the town will help make Hurleyville a model of regional economic development.*
A vibrant pedestrian oriented village and these emergent models for living not only promote the sustainability of Hurleyville, but represent a model of growth based on agriculture, the traditional activity at the heart of this rural New York county.
The urgent work of defining, codifying and scaling up successful models will be accelerated by means of an academic university partner integral to the vision of a hamlet nourished by change.
This speeds the evolution of The Center at a time when fast changing systems of support make new strategies essential.
