Discovery School Research

At the Big Barn Discovery School, current studies are bridging the gap between diverse disciplines and models of care by combining the applied knowledge found in the school setting with the expertise and innovation of our academic research partners.  The Synergy Project focuses on determining the impact of specific physiological factors on behavior, especially those factors that may contribute to the challenging behaviors seen in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

lab school scientists-8426Utilizing sophisticated behavior imaging technology, biometric sensors and computer vision technology in the Lab School classroom, the study is providing a wealth of data on how students with autism respond to their environments and how specific physiologic responses impact challenging behaviors.  The study will identify various causes of challenging behaviors in students with autism and offer insights into how students may be taught adaptive behavior skills instead.
