What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture is a means through which people can re-establish a connection with the place they live through the food that is produced there. CSA is a two way relationship; the farm provides fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs throughout our growing season, and in turn members make a financial commitment to the farm in the spring, and share in the harvest through the summer into autumn.
Changes for 2015
We will be offering two share options this year; the SHARE, and the FAMILY SHARE. The Share will consist of at least 6-8 different vegetables per week in quantities to feed up to two people. The Share is priced at $300. The Family Share will consist of at least 6-8 different vegetables in quantities to feed up to four people. The Family Share is priced at $500.
How Your CSA Share Works
CSA distribution will start the week of Tuesday, June 2nd, and will continue for 23 weeks through November 3d. The Saturday distribution will begin on June 6th, and will conclude on November 7th. Members are invited to pick up their share one day a week, either on Tuesdays between 3:15 pm and 5:30 pm or Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at The Wild Turkey Market on Main Street in Hurleyville, NY.
At the pick-up produce is arranged in bins. Bring your bags to collect your share – none will be supplied at the pick-up. Please sign-in each week, check the list of items and quantities available that day, and then put together your share as you visit with friends, other members, and farm staff who are always there to assist you and answer your questions. (Revised Harvest Schedule on the back of the Prospectus for crop specifics).
We will be offering 3 Flower U-Picks to all CSA Members at their pick-up time. These 3 dates will be spread out from July through September and will be announced when the flower crop is ready to be picked. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you this season!
When there are changes in your schedule
Your membership privileges may be exercised only once per week and are not transferable to a future week. For example, if you do not pick your share of produce this week, you may not take a double share next week. If you know ahead of time that you have a change in schedule, leave a voicemail for the
CSA manager at 845-707-8384, or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org no less than 48 hours prior to your scheduled pick-up. If you experience a last minute schedule change or conflict, please try to have someone pick up your share for you.
If you intend to share a share, we request that there be one primary shareholder who will be responsible for membership and making the payment to the farm. We cannot accept checks from two or more parties for one share. The share must be picked up all at once; you cannot sign in and pick up only your half of the vegetables. All splitting of shares must be done outside the pick-up site.
About Biodynamic Farming
The Biodynamic method dates back to 1924 and is one of the original approaches to organized organic farming worldwide. As in organic farming, biodynamic farming does not permit the use of synthetic chemicals or fertilizers. But what distinguishes a Demeter certified Biodynamic farm from a certified organic farm is that, in its entirety, a Demeter Biodynamic farm is managed as a living organism. This is the fundamental principal of the Biodynamic farming method. In terms of day-to-day practice, management is aimed at creating a holistic farming system that is minimally dependent on imported inputs for its survival. Ideally everything required to maintain the vitality of the farm arises from within the living dynamics of the farm itself. Thanksgiving Farm currently has both USDA Organic and Demeter Biodynamic certifications.
