Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) refers to methods of communication that enhance or replace conventional forms of expression. The goal of AAC is to promote the most effective communication possible for individuals with severe communication disorders.

Here at The Center for Discovery, we believe that everyone has the means and the right to communicate. All speakers communicate in a variety of ways.  We have found that the most successful augmentative communicators use a multimodal approach, which may include several of the following:

• vocalizations and residual speech

• gestures and pointing

• facial expressions

• signs

• writing and typing

• alphabet board

• communication displays and language boards

• voice output communication device

Individuals and their families leave here knowing that there is a way for their loved one to communicate, whether it be a light Tech paper-based communication display, single  switch voice output device or the state of the art, Eye Tracking Module on a high tech communication system
