TCFD AND NYU DENTISTRY JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE DENTAL HYGIENE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH COMPLEX DISABILITIES

A team from New York University’s College of Dentistry, including deans, faculty, pediatric residents, dental hygienists, dental students, and members of the administration visited The Center for Discovery as part of an outreach program designed to promote inclusive oral health care practices for individuals with complex disabilities.

During the dental clinic, essential oral health care services were provided to students at The Center, who have an official diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), along with other complex disabilities and physical limitations. NYU’s team focused on cleanings, screenings, and preventative dental services – essential for promoting overall oral health. Despite each student’s varying diagnoses and limitations, the clinic delivered high-quality dental care in a manner that accommodated the unique needs of all individuals who received services.

“The patience, understanding, and expertise demonstrated by each member of the NYU Dental team created a positive and inclusive environment for The Center’s students and staff,” Chief of Education, Kerri Muzurk said of the clinic. “The team’s ability to adapt and tailor their approach to meet the specific needs of each patient reflects a level of professionalism and compassion that goes above and beyond expectations.”

Partnerships such as these play a crucial role in ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to quality dental care. This collaboration not only benefits the immediate recipients of dental care, but also sets a positive example for future initiatives and partnerships in the healthcare community.

The impact of the dental clinic extended far beyond the immediate dental care provided. The experience, alongside NYU, has left a lasting impression on students and staff at The Center, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for inclusive healthcare practices.  “In our final debrief/reflection huddle, our participants were in tears from being so full of love and admiration for the work you all do at The Center,” Eddie Rosenbaum, Director of Global outreach and International Initiatives and New York University – College of Dentistry said. “It is true, what happens here, matters everywhere!”
